Iopromide Injection

What is Iopromide Injection?

Iopromide is a non-ionic, water-soluble, low-osmolar iodine-based contrast agent. It is used in diagnostic radiology to enhance the visibility of internal structures. Because it is non-ionic, it has a lower osmolality compared to older contrast agents, which significantly reduces the risk of adverse reactions and improves patient comfort during the injection. It is essentially the "dye" that allows radiologists to see blood vessels and organs with high precision.

Uses of Iopromide Injection

  • Contrast-Enhanced CT (CECT): Used to brighten organs and detect tumors or lesions in the head, chest, and abdomen.

  • Angiography: Visualizing blood vessels to detect blockages (stenosis), aneurysms, or clots.

  • Excretory Urography (IVP): Assessing the structure and function of the kidneys, ureters, and bladder.

  • Venography: Specifically used to look for Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) or other venous abnormalities.

  • Digital Subtraction Angiography (DSA): High-resolution imaging of the vascular system where bone shadows are digitally removed.

How Does Iopromide Injection Work?

Iopromide contains iodine atoms which are heavy and effectively "block" X-rays. When the injection is administered into the bloodstream or a body cavity, the areas containing the Iopromide become opaque to X-ray radiation. This creates a sharp contrast between the "bright" iodine-filled structures (like arteries or kidneys) and the surrounding darker tissues. It is rapidly distributed throughout the extracellular fluid and is excreted entirely by the kidneys.

FAQs on Iopromide Injection

1. Is Iopromide safe for patients with allergies? While Iopromide is a non-ionic agent with a lower risk of reaction than older dyes, patients with a history of iodine allergy or severe asthma should be monitored closely. In some cases, premedication with steroids or antihistamines is recommended.

2. How long does the "dye" stay in the body? In patients with normal kidney function, nearly 100% of the Iopromide is excreted by the kidneys within 24 hours. Patients are usually encouraged to drink plenty of water after the procedure to help flush the contrast out.

3. What is "Contrast-Induced Nephropathy" (CIN)? This is a temporary decrease in kidney function that can occur after receiving contrast. It is a key concern for patients with pre-existing kidney disease or diabetes. Clinicians always check Serum Creatinine levels before administering Iopromide to ensure the kidneys can handle the load.
