Fluorescein Injection

What is Fluorescein Injection?

Fluorescein Injection is a diagnostic dye and a member of the hydroxyxanthene class. It is a highly specialized pharmaceutical agent used primarily in Fluorescein Angiography. When injected into the bloodstream, it circulates to the ocular vasculature, allowing clinicians to visualize the blood flow and structural integrity of the retina and choroid under specific blue light wavelengths.

Uses of Fluorescein Injection

  • Fluorescein Angiography: To diagnose and monitor disorders of the retina and choroid, such as diabetic retinopathy.

  • Macular Degeneration: Identifying the location and extent of subretinal neovascularization (leaky blood vessels).

  • Vascular Occlusions: Detecting blockages or slow blood flow in the retinal arteries or veins.

  • Intraocular Tumors: Assisting in the differential diagnosis of tumors within the eye.

  • Cystoid Macular Edema: Visualizing the accumulation of fluid in the macula to guide treatment.

How Does Fluorescein Injection Work?

Fluorescein is a fluorescent substance that responds to electromagnetic radiation. After intravenous administration, the dye travels to the blood vessels of the eye. When illuminated with a blue light, the fluorescein "excites" and emits a yellow-green light (fluorescence), which is captured by specialized cameras to reveal leaks, blockages, or abnormalities in the retinal vessels.

FAQs on Fluorescein Injection

1. Is Fluorescein Injection the same as the eye drops used during exams? No. While both contain the same active dye, the injection is administered intravenously to see the blood vessels inside the eye (the retina), whereas the drops are used topically to detect scratches or foreign bodies on the surface (the cornea).

2. Will Fluorescein Injection change the color of my skin or urine? Yes. Because the dye is bright yellow, it is normal for your skin to appear slightly yellow for 6–12 hours and for your urine to be bright yellow or orange for 24–36 hours as your kidneys filter the dye out of your system.

3. Are there any risks for patients with kidney disease? Fluorescein is primarily excreted through the kidneys. While it is generally well-tolerated, patients with significantly impaired renal function should be monitored, and a dosage adjustment may be considered by the specialist.

4. How quickly does the dye reach the eye after injection? The dye moves very rapidly through the circulatory system, typically reaching the retinal vessels within 7 to 14 seconds after injection into the arm.
