Remdesivir is a broad-spectrum antiviral medicine used for the treatment of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Here are some important details about Remdesivir:
Indication: Remdesivir is indicated for the treatment of COVID-19 in both adults and pediatric patients (12 years of age and older) who weigh at least 40 kg. It is effective in patients who are:
Hospitalized.
Not hospitalized but have mild-to-moderate COVID-19 and are at high risk for progression to severe COVID-19, including hospitalization or death1.
Dosage and Administration:
Testing: Before starting Remdesivir and during treatment, perform renal and hepatic laboratory testing. Assess prothrombin time before starting Remdesivir and monitor as clinically appropriate.
Recommended Dosage:
Loading Dose: Administer a single loading dose of 200 mg of Remdesivir on Day 1.
Maintenance Doses: Follow the loading dose with once-daily maintenance doses of 100 mg of Remdesivir from Day 2 via intravenous infusion.
Treatment Duration:
For hospitalized patients requiring invasive mechanical ventilation and/or ECMO, the recommended total treatment duration is 10 days.
For hospitalized patients not requiring invasive mechanical ventilation and/or ECMO, the recommended treatment duration is 5 days. If clinical improvement is not observed, treatment may be extended for up to 5 additional days (total treatment duration of up to 10 days).
For non-hospitalized patients diagnosed with mild-to-moderate COVID-19 at high risk for progression to severe disease, the recommended total treatment duration is 3 days1.
Administration Route: Remdesivir is administered via intravenous (IV) infusion over 30 to 120 minutes1.
Renal Impairment: Remdesivir is not recommended in patients with an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) less than 30 mL/min1.
